An IBS sufferer has branded Tesco “gross” after she rushed to use the loo in the supermarket but claims staff had removed all the toilet seats.
Sarah-Jane Morris was forced to abandon her shopping at the till and rush to the toilets on August 31 at the Tesco Extra in Sutton, London, due to her condition.
However the 25-year-old, who was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome just last month, says she was “disgusted” that she had no option but to use the toilet with no seats.
The seatless toilet was seemingly accompanied by a note that read: “Due to continued vandalism we have made the decision to remove the toilet seats. Sorry for any inconvenience.”
Swim teacher Morris branded the decision unhygienic and unsafe for elderly people and children.
Morris, from Sutton, in London, said: “It is really gross. I was disgusted.
“How do they expect elderly people or children to use these facilities? With these toilets being right next to the café I find this completely unacceptable.
“From a hygiene aspect, I find this totally horrifying that his has been allowed. I saw another lady exiting the toilets shaking her head.
“I went into the first cubicle and noticed there wasn’t a toilet seat and then I saw that it was like that in others and saw the sign that said it was due to vandalism.
“I was diagnosed with IBS just weeks ago. I was in a lot of pain so I had to make do.
“I had left my shopping at the till when I had to run to the toilet. When I came back I told her they are absolutely disgusting.
“She pulled her manager over and said, we’ve had another complaint about the toilets but they said that there was nothing they could do about it.
“I was in a rush to get home so I didn’t approach anyone else.
“The toilets are right next to the café. I didn’t think you could have food premises without toilets. Some people have said they are the worst toilets and in the past they have been loose.”
Morris revisited the supermarket last week [Sept 7th] and discovered that new toilet seats had been added but there is now a sign informing customers the lavatory will be closed from 11pm until 6am due to ‘misuse overnight’.
She said: “At least the toilets are now open for the majority of the time but I would’ve liked it if it said something like, ‘if you need to use these facilities outside of these times please do not hesitate to ask a member of staff’.”
A Tesco spokesperson claimed they had had a history of vandalism in the store, which had prompted them to review the set-up.
The spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, we have had to close the toilets in our Sutton Cheam Park Farm Extra store between 11pm and 6am due to vandalism.
“This remains under review and we hope to open them fully soon. If customers need to use the toilets between these hours, a colleague will be able to give access.”
